A KINGDOM HEART – LVIII
THE NATURE OF SIN – III

Matthew 9:9 And as Yahushua passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him

Last week’s post ended with this comment:

We are instructed to renew our minds so we can understand and recognize the
will of IAUE in order to be able to do His will.  Over and over again, we have
seen in the Scriptures that we were created for this one glorious purpose…to do
the will of IAUE.  Failure to realize this purpose in our life is the ultimate failure;
and that failure cannot and will not be rewarded.

Sin.  It is not a popular topic of discussion. Typically, we engage the discussion from a theological point of view instead of a personal one because we absolutely do not want to air out our sins in a public forum.  This kind of relationship to the subject of sin is one of the reasons why the church, today, still thinks of sin as “bad things” we do; and the badness of those things is measured by how we or the public views any particular act. That is how we arrive at the idea of big sins versus little sins.

Killing someone is a big sin because it takes a life and wreaks havoc upon the victim’s family and friends. Taking a pen or a few postage stamps from the boss’s office without permission is a little sin because stealing a few petty office supplies would probably go totally unnoticed and would hurt no one.  In this simple illustration we can see how easily we separate sin from its connection to IAUE and make it little more than an issue of human morality determined by social norms and standards.

This deception is one of Satan’s most effective tools at rendering the church powerless to influence the world.  As long as we live our lives with this perspective of sin, we do not and cannot bring to our society any appreciation for the holiness of IAUE.  This is why I suggest that we replace the word “sin” with “disobedience to the will of IAUE.”  When we have that concept firmly established in our thinking, we can no longer evaluate our choice to sin in terms of whether or not it will affect the people around us, or if they will even ever know what we have done.  It will have to be evaluated on the basis of choosing to rebel against the authority of IAUE.  Sin has nothing to do with social norms and standards.  It is not about the affect our actions may have on others.  Sin is about who has the right to rule our lives.  Sin is a litmus test to determine who our Master is.

It is natural to man to keep something to himself, some private luxury usually held in secret.  On the outside, we show the world what we want it to see; but we forget that our Father in Heaven sees what we do in secret.  We delude ourselves into thinking that we are not going to be held accountable for our rebellion against His will, rebellion against His right to rule over us.  The fact of the matter is:

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; IAUE is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

If we continue in sin, there are two ways that accountability for our rebellion against the will of IAUE may come to us; neither way is “pretty,” but one certainly involves more mercy than the other.

1.  IAUE may discipline us.  His discipline is always intended to strike at the root of our right of self-government.  Sin; after all, is our expression that we believe we still have the right to govern our own lives.  One of His forms of discipline is to depreciate our finances either by reduction of income or increase of expenses.  The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil; and it is money that enables us to determine our “comfort level” in life. Diminishing our finances inevitably brings us to a place of recognizing that if IAUE does not intervene to help, we will suffer beyond our own ability to protect ourselves.  We arrive at a place where we discover that we do not have the power to control our life; so why should we assert our authority to do so?  Every person has certain areas of vulnerability that when “poked” will turn their attention back to IAUE.  That is what His discipline is intended to do.

2.  Satan may devastate us.  The Scriptures are clear that when we sow to the flesh, of the flesh we shall reap corruption (Gal 6:8). “Shall” is not the same as “may.”  While “may” expresses the possibility of the consequence, “shall” guarantees it.  Paul tells us in Romans 6:16 that we are servants of the one we obey.  When we give ourselves to disobedience to IAUE, our choice means we serve Satan.  Never think that Satan is benevolent or even neutral when it comes to his intentions in our lives.  His job is “to steal, and to kill, and to destroy(John 10:10).  Sin has pleasure for a season; but when that season is over, the one we have been serving will use that sin to destroy our lives.  What we consider a private luxury is really nothing more than an investment in our own demise.

We have before us a mental battle.  As many preachers and teachers have said, “The battle is in the mind.”  Spiritual victory is won in the mind, when we learn to think correctly.

Proverb 14:12/16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death.

When we learn to think correctly, with the thoughts of IAUE, we cease acting in ways that produce death and destruction in our lives.  It is so tempting to go along with the masses, because there is a sense of security in the numbers; but if the masses are wrong, what does it profit to be numbered among them?

Most of us want to belong.  We want to be a part of the “herd.” It is a natural human reaction.  It takes a certain arrogance or pride to want to be isolated from the masses.  We do not want to stand out from the crowd and have people think of us as a separatist, or worse, as a reprobate; however, when it comes to obedience to the will of IAUE, there can be no compromise.

Consider the lemmings who herd themselves over a cliff to their death.  Would the one lemming who steps out of the crowd and goes a different way be deemed foolish; or are the masses who plunge blindly and submissively to their death the foolish ones, trusting in the group mentality to be the correct way for them?

Consider a group of 20 or more friends at college; and the idea is fomented to vandalize a building on campus in order to make a statement about some cause.  Everyone agrees it is a good idea.  You do not agree; but do you go along because you don’t want to stand alone; or worse, be cast out of the group?  If you go along, however, you are sure to be arrested and have a criminal record.  Which decision is wisdom?

The church at large does not see sin from IAUE’s perspective, and the entirety of the fellowship of believers that grows out of this wrong thinking has corrupted every single other aspect of their lives both individually and collectively.  There is a callousness toward sin in the attitude of the contemporary church.  Jokes are made about sin from the pulpit; and the congregation laughs on key.  Disobedience to IAUE has been incorporated into comedic routines by preachers and evangelists.  It is little wonder that their converts also have no regard for the holiness of IAUE.

Christians, today, think about committing a sin.  They know it is wrong, that they should not do it; but they think to themselves, “Afterwards, I will pray 1 John 1:9 and get rid of the sin.”  They are only thinking of themselves.  They are not thinking of the heartbreak their thoughts and actions are to IAUE; and they certainly have no concept of the destructive repercussions of their sin.  As I have been saying, we think of sin in terms of how bad it is…in our opinion.  Well, let’s look at how bad it is in IAUE’s opinion.

Matthew 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

Do you think Yahushua was speaking allegorically in this passage; or can you get a glimpse of how important this matter is to him and to his Father, IAUE?  If your hand or foot or eye causes you to sin, cut them off.  Your hand or foot or eye is not nearly as important as walking in the holiness of IAUE.  Your willingness to let your flesh lead you into temptations represents a total disregard for the eternity that IAUE desires for you.

Matthew 18:15 If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.
16 But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed
17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

Messiah provides an urgent procedure to deal with a brother who is walking in disobedience to IAUE, giving the individual three separate opportunities to repent and to be restored to IAUE. If he refuses to repent, that sinning brother is to be removed from the fellowship, for his life represents a corrupting element to the church; and stains the body’s representation of the holiness of IAUE.  That brings us to our opening passage of Scripture.

Matthew 9:9 And as Yahushua passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me.  And he arose, and followed him

Matthew (also known as Levi) was a tax collector.  As such, he was hated by the Jews because he participated with the Roman oppressors in collecting tax monies from his own people to support the Roman occupation. Tax collectors also became rich by collecting more than was required in order to pad their own pockets.  Yahushua walked right up to the table where Matthew was at work, spoke to him directly and said, “Follow me.”  That was not an invitation.  It was a command to Matthew from the King of the Jews.  Matthew immediately got up, left his table and his job, “and followed him.”

If we can understand this one point, we can put sin to rest in our lives.  We do not accept Yahushua into our hearts and lives.  He accepts us into his.  The gospel is not an invitation to ask Yahushua to forgive us of our sins and come into our heart to be our “personal Lord and savior.”  Nowhere in Scripture is such an absurdity to be found.  No, the gospel is a command; and the only correct response to the command is obedience…obedience that begins with that initial response and follows with us the rest of our lives.

A KINGDOM HEART – LVII (THE NATURE OF SIN – II)

A KINGDOM HEART – LVII
THE NATURE OF SIN – II

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then?  Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

Last week’s post ended with this comment:

Perhaps we simply need a fundamental exchange of terms.  If we stopped
referring to “sin” and just called it what it is, “disobedience,” we would see
ourselves in a new light.  We would see ourselves as rebellious brats still
opting to do what we want instead of doing what the Creator wants.

What is sin?  Is smoking a sin?  Is drinking beer a sin?  Is going to the movies a sin?  Is making out with your girlfriend/boyfriend a sin?  I have heard stories of German Christians who go from their Sunday church services out to eat; and while everyone at the table is drinking a beer, they discuss the horror that American Christians smoke cigarettes.

When I was a young man at college, I asked a girl if she would go out with me on a date.  She knew I was a person of faith because I met her in a Christian singing group on campus; so she told me up front, “I need to be able to have sex with the person I date.”  I told her that I could not give that to her; so she countered with, “Well, what can you give me?”  Frankly, at that point in my life, I was both shocked and exhilarated; and I told her I would need to look at the Scriptures to find the answer to that question because it was not something that had ever occurred to me to study. As a young man 19-20 years of age, I looked for Scriptures that explained the parameters of a dating life.  It didn’t exist, because dating was not a function of the Hebrew culture, thus it was not addressed in the Scriptures. It did not even occur to me back then that obeying the will of IAUE meant more than just doing what I could find the Bible said to do.  I was left with the obvious answer of not committing adultery or fornication.  Still (I say thankfully in retrospect) that was not a satisfactory answer for this girl.

Men look at sin as either:

   a) what is obviously wrong to their own sensibilities, or
   b) what is wrong measured by accepted norms and customs; or
   c) breaking the laws set by government, or
   d) “do’s and don’ts” that we can see in black and white in the Scriptures.

None of these concepts understand the nature of sin. It is absolutely irrelevant what we think is sinful. Social norms or cultural standards are based on human relationships and have nothing to do with sin. Breaking the laws of governments, whether civil or criminal laws, is not sin.  Even behavior that is contrary to the do’s and don’t’s spelled out for us in the Scripture does not in itself constitute sin.

1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

1 Corinthians 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

The apostle Paul states that everything is lawful for him; but that does not mean he runs amok and enjoys doing whatever he wants to do.  He clarifies that though everything is lawful to him, not everything is expedient; he will not permit anything to bring him under bondage; and not everything edifies (is not encouraging or profitable to him or to others).  You see, Paul understood the nature of sin. Sin is not what is unacceptable to man. Sin is disobeying IAUE.

The word for sin in both the Hebrew and the Greek manuscripts is taken from a term used in archery.  It is what one would call out when an archer failed to hit the bullseye.  It means, “to miss the mark.”  What does that mean?

You missed the mark.
You did not do what you were supposed to do.
You did not accomplish the intended objective.
You did not obtain approval for your effort.
You did not do what was necessary to obtain the reward.
            You failed.

What is the mark?  The mark is obedience.  Missing the mark then, quite simply, is disobedience.  Missing the mark is not smoking a cigarette, or drinking a beer, or going to a movie…unless IAUE has said to you not to do it.  The children of Israel marched around Jericho for seven straight days.  One of those days was the Sabbath; which means the entire congregation of Israel broke the law of the Sabbath; but they obeyed the will of IAUE. The showbread in the tabernacle, by law, could only be eaten by the priests who served in the tabernacle, and that only on the Sabbath; and yet, David and his men ate the showbread because they were hungry; and the Scriptures did not record their act as having been sinful.  Yahushua and his disciples worked on the Sabbath day doing good.  The Pharisees criticized that they were breaking the law; but IAUE approved of their deeds.

Sin, by definition, is disobedience to the will of IAUE.

Why are we laboring over this issue of the nature of sin?  It is because it is a critical concept about which our minds think wrongly; and we must have our minds renewed to think of sin the way IAUE thinks of sin.  Once this is clarified in the mind of the disciple, he/she can no longer wake up in the morning and proceed about the day in whatever manner he or she pleases.  Our choice of what to wear, what time we leave for work, even what time we awaken to begin our day are no longer our choices to make.  We have a Master, now; who always did those things that pleased His Father; and it is his purpose to train us to understand how to please his Father in absolutely everything we do.

We must stop thinking of sin as doing bad things; for as long as we hold to that idea, sin will be a matter measured by our own opinions, which effectually makes us our own gods, for sin will then be a breach of our will instead of the will of IAUE.  Sin is what we do every single time we do not do as IAUE instructs: If we fail to do what He tells us to do; if we refuse to say what He tells us to say.  If we miss that mark, we miss the only thing that is truly important in our life.  Everything else pales into insignificance.  What a tragedy it would be if the insignificant thing is what is important to us.

Matthew 16:26  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

If we are to become faithful disciples, we must learn to think correctly about this matter.

Luke 1:68 Blessed be IAUE the Elohim of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

The whole purpose of IAUE sending His son for us was to enable us to serve Him.

Hebrews 10:Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O IAUE.
Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O IAUE. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Yahushua Messiah once for all.

Yahushua took away the ritual sacrifices, replacing it with the simple doing of the will of IAUE.  He didn’t replace it with praying a “magic prayer,” then asking us to attend church on Sunday.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of IAUE.

We are instructed to renew our minds so we can understand and recognize the will of IAUE in order to be able to do His will.  Over and over again, we have seen in the Scriptures that we were created for this one glorious purpose…to do the will of IAUE.  Failure to realize this purpose in our life is the ultimate failure; and that failure cannot and will not be rewarded.

A KINGDOM HEART – LVI (THE NATURE OF SIN - I)

WBS.087
FUNDAMENTALS OF DISCIPLESHIP

A KINGDOM HEART – LVI

THE NATURE OF SIN - I

Proverb 16:6  By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of IAUE men depart from evil.

Last week’s post ended with this comment:

Know this, that nothing on the broad path has value to the King,
because all of it is under the sentence of IAUE’s condemnation.

By this we may understand which path we are travelling.  If we are carrying the baggage of the old man with the option to satisfy our own will whenever it appeals to us, we may know that we are proceeding recklessly down the broad path that leads unto death; because the old man cannot fit on the narrow path that leads unto life.  I know this concept violates the doctrinal positions of many; but we must make a decision.  Are we going to live our lives according to what the masses believe; or according to what the Holy Spirit reveals to us? Are we going to be men pleasers or pleasers of IAUE?

I occasionally check out the programming on various religious broadcasting networks on television just to see what ministers are saying these days.  This past week, I came upon an interview that a well-known minister and his wife were having with a young lady.  The lady was sharing that she “wrestled with God for three years” before succumbing to do what He had been leading her to do.  All three of them chuckled over the comment.  I looked at my wife and said, “They just laughed about her willful, persistent and repeated disobedience to IAUE.”  The idea of wrestling with IAUE is common within Christendom and comes with what could almost be described as a commendation for enduring the dealings of IAUE long enough to become obedient to His will.  From IAUE’s perspective, I would dare say He did not find it commendable; and her ultimate “yielding” to do what He had been asking her to do very likely was not borne of repentance, but rather an act motivated by the flesh.

Sin is no longer significant in the mind of the church, today.  The false gospel that has produced the contemporary church resolves all issues of sin with a single “magic” prayer:  “Jesus, please forgive me of my sins and come into my heart.  I accept you as my personal Lord and Savior.  Thank you. Amen.”  In the mind of most, this means that Messiah forgave them of the things for which they feel guilty having committed (which makes sin an issue of their own making, and does not have a view toward IAUE’s perspective of sin). This is why most believers continue to live their lives according to their own selfish will, never giving any serious consideration to the will of IAUE.  The only sins of consequence to them are the ones that make them feel guilty; and that is usually because they violate some social norm or standard, or relates to some addictive behavior; all of which are measured by human standards and not by IAUE’s standard.

Obedience to the will of IAUE is not a part of the mindset of the average believer sitting in church on Sunday morning.  I find this to be a most peculiar condition since they ALL believe that Messiah came to die for their sins.  As we stated in a recent post:

Sin, by definition, is disobedience to the will of IAUE.

Sin is whatever is not in conformity with what IAUE wants.  IAUE’s will is the universal standard and expectation of all life.  It is the universal constant.  Any and all 1) disagreement with, 2) consideration of alternatives to, and 3) violations of His will is a wrongful act.

If IAUE sent His son to die for our sins to pay the price of our disobedience to His will; why then are we not a people committed to doing His will, now?  Isn’t that the most sensible and logical response to His forgiveness?  Does it not stand to reason that if Messiah came to deal with our disobedience to IAUE’s will; and the consequences of that disobedience, that we would stop being disobedient to His will, now?

Romans 6:1  What shall we say then?  Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
2  IAUE forbid!  How shall we who are dead to sin live any longer therein?

Relinquishing our lives to take up the life of the Master was an essential ingredient of the gospel.  We have been bought with a price; therefore, we are no longer our own, we belong to another.  How can we who have died to the person we were before we bowed the knee to the Master Messiah Yahushua, get up off that knee and carry our old man into this new life?  The answer is simple.  Most of us didn’t die.  That is the most significant symptom of the product of a false gospel.

The true gospel is stated in one simple sentence:  “Repent, for the Kingdom of IAUE is at hand.”  Nowhere in the book of Acts, when we see the gospel presented to the lost, do we find anyone being asked to accept Yahushua as a personal lord and savior.  Nowhere do we see anyone being asked to implore Yahushua to forgive them of their sins.  This contemporary message does not have the power to bury the old man and to raise up a new man to walk in the power of a new life.  Its focus is not on the holiness of IAUE, but rather the guilty conscience of man.

Repentance focuses on who you are, what you are, and how you have been; and demands that you turn from all of it, to leave it all behind; and with your life serve another.  The early convert had a clear understanding that when he entered the waters of baptism, he was burying that old man; and that what came out of the waters of baptism was no longer to be lived in accordance with his own will; but rather, was to be lived in obedience to the will of IAUE.   Forgiveness focuses on a release of guilt and has no direct impact on who or what you are, or how you have been.  It just releases you from the debt incurred by who you are, what you are, and how you have been.  Forgiveness makes no demand for you to change.  Repentance does.

You can see from these two perspectives why believers today have such little appreciation for the seriousness of their disobedience.  Focusing on forgiveness fails to see their disobediences as the abominations they are in the sight of IAUE.  After all, they did cost Yahushua his life.

Hebrews 12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

I opened my blog with this verse from Hebrews 12, for several weeks without ever commenting on it…letting its message quietly sink into the readers’ heart.  This verse demonstrates the seriousness of sin, of disobeying IAUE’s will; that we should resist it with such resolve that we would refuse to disobey our Father even should it require the spilling of our own blood.  Such is the heart of the disciple regarding disobeying IAUE. It just isn’t done; and nothing can make us compromise on that point.

Proverb 16:6  By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of IAUE men depart from evil.

Those who have been reading this blog from the beginning recognize that one of the first subjects we discussed was the Fear of IAUE.  The Scriptures are clear on this point that the Fear of IAUE is the beginning of knowledge; it is the beginning of wisdom; and it is the means by which men depart from evil---by which they stop sinning.  It is also virtually extinct from modern Christendom; and this is due to the false contemporary gospel message.  If we understood the Fear of IAUE, we would have little difficulty appreciating the nature of sin; and we would be clear that there are consequences to our every act of disobedience to IAUE.

Perhaps we simply need a fundamental exchange of terms.  If we stopped referring to “sin” and just called it what it is, “disobedience,” we would see ourselves in a new light.  We would see ourselves as rebellious brats still opting to do what we want instead of doing what the Creator wants.  The only wake-up call that can fix this problem is the pure message of the true gospel:  REPENT.

A KINGDOM HEART – LV

WBS.086
FUNDAMENTALS OF DISCIPLESHIP

A KINGDOM HEART – LV

1 Thessalonians 4:1  Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Master Yahushua, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please Elohim, so ye would abound more and more.

Last week’s post ended with this comment:

Those who would be the disciples of the Master Yahushua Messiah must choose
whether or not they will return to the bondage of the flesh (which no longer has a
natural hold on their souls) or consent with IAUE that their flesh is under sentence
of condemnation; to abide in the life of the Master and do the will of IAUE without
resistance.  This is not something to be pondered over time or to approach as
though it can be done progressively bit by bit.  It is a choice of life versus death

We have examined many Scriptures over the past few months that clearly reveal the purpose of our very existence is to do the will of IAUE, and yet we still do our own will so much of the time.  Believers, today, do not take the Scripture seriously.  They look at the commands of Scriptures as standards and social norms by which to judge the behavior of a brother or sister, rather than to find the will of IAUE for their own life.

The basic root problem is an issue of one’s conversion.  The contemporary Christian message is not the New Testament gospel; consequently, it does not have the power to produce the conversion of sinners to become disciples.  Instead, it moves the sinner into a religious culture, allowing the sinner to retain his/her sinful practices while maintaining an outward compliance with the cultural standards and social norms expected of a church member.  This also explains why most believers use the Scripture as a manual to judge violators of those standards and norms.

Let’s contemplate this issue of conversion.  If you convert an electrical current from AC to DC, you now have DC current. The AC current no longer exists.  If you convert a manuscript from French to English, the English version no longer exists.  If you convert U.S. dollars to British pounds, the U.S. dollars no longer exist.  Get it?  If you convert a sinner to Messiah, the sinner no longer exists.  What he or she was before coming to Messiah does not follow on with him/her.  It ceases to exist.

Instead, what we see in contemporary experience (because we are preaching something that is not the gospel of the New Testament) is like an English translation that keeps a lot of French phrases in the manuscript; or more specifically, it is like changing only half of our dollars into pounds, so we can retain the ability to access and make purchases in the markets of both countries.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Messiah, he is a new creature: old things have passed away; behold, all things are become new.

If we think that believing that Yahushua was the son of IAUE; that he was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, was impaled on a tree, died to pay the penalty of our sins, and rose again the third day secures for us an eternity with him, we are deluded.  If we think that asking him to forgive us of our sins because we believe these things to be true secures for us an eternity with him; we are deceived.  Unless we are converted, our “belief” or our “prayer” is only taking a big step onto the broad path which leads to destruction.  The gate that permits entry to the narrow path that leads to life is difficult.  Passage through that gate is not gained so easily as the offering of a simple prayer or of accepting as true the facts of Messiah’s life.  A conversion must take place.  What exists on one side of the gate is not permitted to pass through to the other side.  It first must die so that something new might enter through that gate.

Galatians 2:20 I am impaled with Messiah: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Messiah liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of IAUE, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

This is conversion.  It recognizes that the life that stands before the strait gate is under sentence of condemnation.  It acknowledges that the judgment of IAUE upon that life is just and true; and believes that Messiah experienced the penalty of the divine judgment on behalf of that life. How then, standing there at the gate and looking through to the other side, could the one who desires to pass even think that he may take anything of himself through the gate which cost Yahushua his life?  There is nothing of himself that may pass, for it is all under sentence of condemnation.  He must die; and in that dying, he must trust that Messiah will create something new that may proceed through the gate; and that new life must life by faith.

Paul loved the Thessalonians.  He had preached the gospel there and a great multitude responded to his message.  However, the unbelieving Jews, moved with envy, gathered a company of what we would call, today, “low-lifes.”  These were con-artists, the people who were hucksters in the market place, experienced at manipulating and deceiving would-be customers to buy their stolen or worthless ware.  They stirred up the community to oppose Paul and his team and those who were responding to his message.  Paul had to leave town under cloak of darkness for his own safety.  He knew he was leaving behind new disciples who had to deal with much opposition and persecution; so he longed to return to Thessalonica to insure the disciples were holding true to the faith that had been delivered unto them.  When he could stand it no longer, he sent Timothy back to Thessalonica to check on them.  He was overwhelmed with joy when Timothy brought back word of their steadfastness; and he took up pen to write these words.

1 Thessalonians 4:1  Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Master Yahushua, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please Elohim, so ye would abound more and more.

The focus of Paul’s concern was that the hardship of their afflictions would prevent them from walking in a manner that was pleasing to Elohim.  He wanted to be assured that they were still ascertaining the will of IAUE and committing their lives to the performance of it. There is no other way to please IAUE; so this is what demonstrates that we are on the narrow path.

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves…

It would be wise to assess our own lives from time to time to determine if we are committed to knowing and doing the will of IAUE.  Are we converted?  Is doing the will of IAUE the centrality of our day to day existence?  We should examine ourselves to know if we snuck some contraband on board with us when he entered the path we chose to walk.  We must examine ourselves with a keen awareness that nothing of our former life may tag along with us.  If we are keeping our own self-will on board, then we should know…we are on the broad path; for there is none of that on the narrow path.

I say again, as I did last week.  This is not something that we slowly acquire bit by bit.  A man does not die bit by bit.  One moment he is alive; the next moment he is dead.  All that is under the judgment of IAUE is not welcome on the narrow path…the path of genuine discipleship.

Know this, that nothing on the broad path has value to the King because all of it is under the sentence of IAUE’s condemnation.

Kingdom heart: a heart that offers no resistance to the performance of the will of IAUE.

A KINGDOM HEART – LIV  (THE FLESH  IX)

Proverb 16:17 The highway of the upright is to depart from evil:  he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.

Last week’s post ended with this comment:

Revisit how you think of the promise of the gospel, the promise of the resurrection
and of the body taking on incorruption and immortality.  Is it not real in your mind?
Is the reward too far away to have a present impact on your life?  Or is it just a
fantasy that has never held your heart captive to the joy that is set before you? Our
choices determine whether the grace of Elohim will rule in our heart, or the law of
sin in the flesh will exercise dominion over our lives.   Choose.

For much too long, the teachers and preachers in this age of Christianity have focused on our position in Messiah rather than our current experience in him.  For example, we have been taught that we are the righteousness of Elohim “in Messiah;” that Messiah is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption; that we are seated with him in heavenly places “in Messiah Yahushua.” The consequence of such teaching is that believers think they may just sit back and relax and enjoy their life and pursue their own goals because Messiah has done everything for us. There are no consequences for our actions for which we need be concerned. We need only to wait for the promise to come of everlasting life.

This teaching of our position in Messiah is a half-truth.  Our position “in Messiah” has been made possible for one reason; and that reason is not to secure for us some heavenly or eternal prize.  It is so the life of Messiah in whom we have been “positioned” might be worked out experientially in our lives.

John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father I the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit…
4 Abide in me, and I in you.  As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather then, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

The whole point of being in the vine, of being “in Messiah,” is to bear fruit.  If we are not bearing fruit, we are worse than worthless and shall be cast off and cast into the fire.

Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Yahushua Messiah were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Messiah was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

The objective of being baptized into Messiah is to be able to walk in newness of life.

Romans 11:21 For if IAUE spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of IAUE: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

IAUE is not looking so much at what we believe as much as what we do.  If we believe correctly, we will be doing correctly.  Faith without corresponding actions is not faith at all.  It is a religious system of doctrine.  True faith taps into the power and life of the vine; and that life flows through us and captivates us, and takes hold and transforms the nature of the branch and bears fruit that does honor to the vine.  The only way a wild olive branch can demonstrate that it is grafted into the true vine is by bearing fruit that is consistent with the true vine.  The only way it can bear such honest fruit is by abiding in the vine so as to allow the life of the vine to take full command of the wild olive branch.

The life of Messiah is not one of deception, manipulation, pride, ego, selfishness, anger, malice, resentment, unforgiveness, plotting, conniving, taking offense, rudeness, backbiting, partying, gluttony, laziness, retaliation, defensiveness, etc.  If this is the kind of fruit we are bearing, we should be fearful, for it demonstrates that we are not abiding in the vine which is Messiah.

Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of Elohim.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

It is important to note that Paul says that those who “do such things” shall not inherit the kingdom of Elohim.  He does not state, “those who are lost, who have never prayed to accept Messiah, who do such things.”  No, he says those who “do” shall “not” inherit.  He is setting forth the distinction between the fruit of a wild olive tree (the flesh) and the fruit of the true vine, which is Yahushua Messiah.  You see, we are positioned “in him” for one purpose…to let the nature of his life be manifest in our life.

Picture, if you will, two hands with their fingers intertwined.  One hand represents the flesh, the other represents the soul.
 Soul                  Flesh

This is our condition before we come to Messiah.  Our mind, will and emotions are inseparably linked to the flesh.  It is like a brain tumor regarding which the doctor says “We cannot remove the tumor.  It has so attached itself throughout the brain; to remove it would kill the patient.”  The flesh marked every single action our soul ever chose to make because it held death over us as extortion. Our nature was flesh, because we were incapable of another kind of expression to our life.  When we repent and acknowledge the Master Yahushua, these “hands” are separated (the tumor is removed).  The flesh and the soul still exist; but no longer are they intertwined.

We know what it is that hinders our bearing the fruit of the Spirit.  It is the fact we have not relinquished our hold on the flesh.  In the new creation, when we were born of the Spirit, the hold of the flesh was relinquished from us; but now we do not want to let it go.  This condition actually serves as a litmus test to prove the quality of the gospel message to which we have responded.

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Messiah: for it is the power of IAUE unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Salvation is deliverance from our enemies and all that would hinder our ability to obey the will of IAUE.  The gospel is powerful to produce that condition within man, such that man may freely devote his life to the performance of the will of IAUE.  This, however, is not the general condition of what calls itself “the Church.”  The gospel Paul preached had an entirely different result than that which is preached today.

Galatians 5:24 And they that are Messiah’s have impaled the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Those who responded to the gospel in the New Testament “impaled the flesh with the affections and lusts.”  “Impaled” (“crucified” in most English translations) has reference to a specific judgment.  It represented not just the guilty verdict of man; but the judgment of IAUE.  One condemned to death by being impaled was rejected and condemned by IAUE; and had to be taken outside of the city to be put to death. Nothing about that person was worthy of the city of IAUE or the people of IAUE.  Such is the flesh.  It bears the condemnation of IAUE.  Those who are Messiah’s by proper response to the true gospel, consent with IAUE that the flesh is not worthy to be regarded in any manner.  It is only worthy of death in the most humiliating of manners.

The majority of believers, today, however, still consider much good in the flesh; and certainly enough good and pleasurable within it to turn from abiding in Messiah to entertain its delights.  Be cautious Church.  To the degree you entertain the flesh you will grow and bear the fruit of the flesh.  Once you bear the fruit of the flesh, it will become known to all whom you serve.

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Those who would be the disciples of the Master Yahushua Messiah must choose whether or not they will return to the bondage of the flesh (which no longer has a natural hold on their souls) or consent with IAUE that their flesh is under sentence of condemnation; to abide in the life of the Master and do the will of IAUE without resistance.  This is not something to be pondered over time or to approach as though it can be done progressively bit by bit.  It is a choice of life versus death.

Consider that from the Father’s perspective, we are a pearl of great price worthy of paying everything to possess; and yet, we cannot even possess our own souls in righteousness for a day without catering to the flesh.  We must see ourselves as IAUE sees us; and allow Him the freedom to reproduce His nature within us.  We are called to this.  Can you see it?
