DISCIPLESHIP 101 (Part 6 - Gates and Ways)

DISCIPLESHIP 101

Part 6 – Gates and Ways

Luke 13:23 Then said one unto him, Master, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,
24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

Peter thought, if he was going to be killed as a consequence of his obedience to the Master; what was John’s fate going to be?  Yahushua’s reply was “What difference does it make, Peter?  Are you going to follow me or not?”  Even after the resurrection, Yahushua did not coddle his disciples.  Discipleship was not going to be easy.  It was going to cost everything. It still does.

Yesterday, I listened to a recorded sermon given by a contemporary minister of the gospel.  In his message he said that Christians, today, were looking to go to Heaven; and that Heaven was the focus of the gospel message. He then clarified that Messiah did not come to bring people to Heaven; but rather, he came to bring people to IAUE.  Let’s pause to contemplate that for a minute.

If I am delivered a message that promises me Heaven, then I am the important element in the message.  Heaven was made for me, for my enjoyment, to please men.  It’s all about me, me, me.  I can then embrace this no-cost message, gain the promise of eternal security in a wonderful place; and have no real constraints on how I live my life until I get to Heaven.

If I am delivered a message that explains how IAUE took the steps to accomplish all that was necessary to restore man into fellowship and relationship with him; and all it takes is to repent (to turn from the very thing that demonstrates our rebellion against Him), and to bow my knee in allegience to the mastery of His Son, Yahushua Messiah, then I realize, though I am obviously deemed important by IAUE, it is all about HIM, not about me. The focus is not on me having an expectation of a happy eternity.  The focus is on living before IAUE as He wants me to live, now.

The first message leaves man utterly selfish.  Though he may embrace a religious culture and refine some of his behavior and activities (at least when he is in the eye of the public), his focus is still on what he wants; not what IAUE wants.  Unfortunately, it is true.  The contemporary gospel message and the frequent reinforcement of sermons on Sunday mornings absolutely protect a selfish focus for our lives. In fact, it would almost seem that some messages are not satisfied with how selfish we already are.  They promote a genuinely materialistic purpose for IAUE being in our life.

The way in which Yahushua taught, the message in many of his parables, and the comments he made to and about the Pharisees and to the rich and to the teachers of the law lead one to ask him:

Luke 13:23 Then said one unto him, Master, are there few that be saved …

We have already noted in recent weeks that Yahushua was not quick to receive one’s devotion to become his disciple.  He would always challenge them with something that was absolutely offensive to their selfish sensibilities; and one by one….and sometimes masses by masses, they turned and walked away from him, no more to follow after him.

So, are there few that be saved?  How did the Master respond to that question?

Luke 13:24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

Notice that he did not say, “Yes” or “No.”  He said, “Strive.” It was a similar answer to that which he gave to Peter when he asked what John’s fate would be. “This is what YOU need to know.”    This word “strive” (agonizomai – to endeavor with effort, to contend against that which opposes your success) indicates that just getting through the gate is going to be a contest of the heart.  It is going to require zeal and purpose.

A “strait” gate is not a “straight” gate.  It is a narrow gate.  It will require upon being opened, that you turn sideways, and squeeze through the entrance.  It means exposing yourself to be utterly vulnerable and indefensible as you move through the entrance.  Why is this? It is because, beyond this gate, it is NOT ABOUT YOU.  IT IS ABOUT IAUE.

The Master DID tell this questioner, however, that “many” would seek to enter this gate but they would not be “able.”  This word, “able” means, to have the ability; or, to be capable of accomplishing.  In this context, it means they are not qualified to enter.  Once again, we see that the Master is focused on the quality of his disciples and not on the number of them. He does not lower the entrance requirements just because the masses cannot follow him at the current standard.

Messiah made similar comments recorded in the gospel of Matthew.

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Notice in this passage, the Master gives a reason why you should strive to enter in at the strait gate.  It is because the “other” gate is deceptively way too easy to pass through; and it leads to destruction.  When you know that, it isn’t much of a choice.  Or is it?

He also gives the reason why most do not enter in at the strait gate.  It is because the “other” gate is broad.  It has much easier entrance requirements; and not only that, beyond the strait gate, the way it leads to is “narrow” (thlibo - compressed and fraught with troubles).  It isn’t a life of smooth sailing.  It is a life filled with conflict.  How can that possibly be deemed desirable to choose that way of life?

There you see the difference between the gospel that focuses on IAUE and the message that focuses on YOU.

The problem is, when you are the listener, you either believe or reject the message preached.  If you believe the gospel of Heaven, then you walk through the wide gate to a broad way. Once on that broad pathway, it is intoxicating, satisfying, full of yourself.  If you ever become aware of the fact that you are on the path that leads to destruction, you still can make the choice.  “Will I embrace a gospel that is about IAUE instead of about ME?  Will I forsake all to follow Messiah?  Will I willingly lay down my life, my defenses, my selfishness, and choose a life that will be resisted and opposed and persecuted all to glorify IAUE and to honor the King?”

Though Yahushua tells us in this passage of Scripture that many will choose the wide gate and broad path BECAUSE the gate is narrow and the pathway is one of hardship and conflict that leads to life; one does not necessarily understand the destination of each gate and pathway. You can see the difference in the gates and the paths; but not the destination.  Many choose the wide gate and broad path thinking it is the right choice; thinking it is the better choice for them. After all, that is where the masses are entering; and that many people can’t be wrong, can they?  Of course motivated self-interest also is a function of their choice.  They do not realize the destination promised to their choice; they only know it is an easier option to obtain what they believe is the same goal.

It could be said of most preachers, today, what Messiah said of the teachers of the law in his day.

Luke 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

Once we become aware that we have entered the wide gate to a broad path; we must acknowledge that its destination is destruction.  That leaves us with the choice to continue on to our own destruction; or to repent and believe the TRUE gospel, and then live for IAUE.  One might think this would be a “no-brainer,” but the hold of the broad pathway to an unrepentant life is strong. This is why the Master instructed the questioner to strive to enter the strait gate. Can we let go of the fairy tale of an already-secured Heaven to reach for something that will cost us everything?

DISCIPLESHIP 101 (Part 5 - Come and Follow)

DISCIPLESHIP 101

Part 5 – Come and Follow

Matthew 16:24 Then said Yahushua unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Mark 8:34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Would we withstand the requirements of Yahushua to be his disciple; or would we be such as cannot be his disciple because we have not forsaken all to follow him? If we believe that simply praying a prayer secures our eternity; then why would any of us ever suffer loss to our own pleasures and desires to follow him; and yet, the Master says to us:Come and follow me.”

Over the past few weeks, I have been showing through the Scriptural record that the Master Yahushua was not going throughout the region preaching to enlist as many people to be his disciples as he possibly could.  He was not about securing the entire population to believe in him.  He canvassed the land to find those whose hearts were prepared for the rigors of kingdom living. He explained to the masses that one must count the cost to be his disciple.  He gave them to consider one who would put his hand to the plow, but not have the stamina or tenacity to finish plowing the field; or one who would begin to build a house; but not have the wherewithal to finish it; or one who saw an advancing army of superior numbers and not calculate wisely how best to confront it.

Throughout his ministry, the Master persisted in qualifying his disciples. He was lenient on no one.  To the one who wanted to wait to take care of the needs of his family; he said, “Let the dead bury the dead.”  To the rich he said, “Sell what you have, give it to the poor, then come and follow me.”  To others who expressed a willingness to follow him, he said he didn’t even have a place to sleep at night.

Messiah’s technique in determining his disciples reminds me of the story of Gideon (Judges 6-7).  They had a war to fight, an enemy virtually without number to defeat.  Gideon was able to raise an army of 32,000 men.  To them, he said, “Whoever is fearful, go home;” and 22,000 men went home. Another test eliminated all but 300 men; and with 300 men, they defeated the Midianites and Amalekites.  Messiah knows it is not numbers that win the battle; but the Spirit of IAUE.  He just needs those in whom the Spirit of IAUE will be allowed to work.

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with IAUE? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of IAUE.
Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

The Spirit of IAUE desires full reign over the heart and mind of the follower of Yahushua Messiah.  How can one call him “Master” only to retain the right to pursue his/her own interests? A disciple is not one with a divided purpose, or one having multiple interests.  Such persons are called adulterers and adulteresses. They are unfaithful to their wedding vows. Messiah was not looking for those who would follow him for the moment; but who, later, would run after other lovers.

Let’s take a look at how his circle of twelve began to be formed.

We know from the account in John 12:37-42, that Yahushua had just met Andrew and Simon (Peter).  Andrew had witnessed Yahushua being baptized of John, and heard John declare that he was the Son of Elohim and the Lamb of Elohim. This account that follows may very well have occurred within the next couple of days.

Mark 1:16 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
17 And Yahushua said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.
19 And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

Luke provides us more detail on this event.

Luke 5:1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of IAUE, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,
And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
6 And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Yahushua’s knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Master.
9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Yahushua said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

Peter and Andrew, James and John, with their families and employees had fished all night without success. Fishing was their livelihood.  They were good at it. This particular morning, they had nothing to take to the market place; so while they were washing their nets, Simon allowed Yahushua to use his boat to distance himself off shore from the press of the emerging crowd who had come to hear him speak.  After preaching to the crowd, he told Peter and Andrew to go back out into the deep water and cast their nets again.  Though it seemed illogical (You know, the fish weren’t biting.), they obeyed his word.  The catch was so great they had to call their partners, James and John, to come help them with the catch.  Even with two boats, the catch was so great it nearly sank both boats.

Before they even reached the shore, they immediately began mending their nets that had been torn by the great number of fish they had just caught.  A fishing company is only as healthy as its nets.  They were tending to the immediate needs of their business; when Yahushua said, “Come and follow me.”  When they reached the shore, Peter and Andrew left their nets, and their boat.  Moving down the shore to the next boat, Messiah commanded James and John to “come and follow.”  They immediately left their nets, their father, and their workers.  They “forsook all and followed him.”

Not long after this event, we see another one of the twelve added to his circle.

Matthew 9:9 And as Yahushua passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.

Matthew (also called “Levi”) was a publican, a tax collector.  Just like the IRS, today, he was despised.  He made his fortune collecting taxes for the Romans; and like all publicans, he no doubt collected more than was required, thus enriching himself at the expense of his fellow Jews.  If one could disregard the contempt of his own people, it was a dream job by which one could become wealthy.  Matthew had it good (so to speak); and yet, one command from the Master, “Follow me,” and Matthew walked away from his cushy well-paying job, forsook all and followed Yahushua.

We all are familiar with the story of how Peter denied knowing the Master three times, the night Yahushua was betrayed, tried and beaten. After Yahushua rose from the dead, he appeared to the eleven who had gone fishing all night and who, rather familiarly, had caught nothing all night long.  As the ship was about 300 feet from the shore, Yahushua, standing on the shore, yelled out to them if they had been successful; and they replied that they had caught nothing all night.  The Master told them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat.  When they did, they caught a great number of fish.  Peter knew instantly that the man on the shore was Yahushua (at 300 feet in the early morning light, it was not possible to make a visual identification). This was not the first time he had experienced this.

The Master was already on the shore cooking some fish and invited them to join him for the meal. Thrice, Yahushua secured Peter’s loyalty (one for each act of betrayal); then described what his discipleship would cost him.

John 21:18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
19 This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify Elohim. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Yahushua loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Master, which is he that betrayeth thee?
21 Peter seeing him saith to Yahushua, Master, and what shall this man do?
22 Yahusha saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

DISCIPLESHIP 101 (Part 4 - Count the Cost)

WBS.207
FUNDAMENTALS OF DISCIPLESHIP

DISCIPLESHIP 101

Part 4 – Count the Cost

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of Elohim in Messiah Yahushua.
15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, Elohim shall reveal even this unto you.

The Master did not expect the masses to become disciples; but he certainly expected those who became his disciples to search through the masses and find those whose hearts were “good ground,” and not devote all their time on those whose hearts were unwilling to be separated from the world.

Last week I introduced a message I call, “The Cannot Be’s.”  Quite opposite from contemporary Christian preachers and teachers who try to sell the gospel using the wisdom of man’s words to convince people that it is in their best interests to “pray the magic prayer” and accept “Jesus” into their hearts (e.g., “God has a wonderful plan for your life.” “You will go to Heaven when you die.” “God wants you to prosper in this life.” “You will have an abundant life.” “All the problems in your life will go away.”); the Messiah himself, the Master we presume to serve, did seemingly everything in his ability to give people both a reason and an opportunity to turn and walk away from him.  With great multitudes following him, he turned and said to them:

Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his stake, and come after me, cannot be my disciple

Luke 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Does that remotely sound like, “Just ask Jesus to come into your heart and forgive you of your sins, and you will be saved?”  Has the Master’s message changed so dramatically; or has man changed the Master’s message? Messiah is not looking for people merely to believe he is who he says he is.  The Scriptures say that “the demons believe and tremble.”  Belief is simply the first step toward discipleship; and it is disciples that he has commanded to be made of all the nations.

On an earlier occasion, the Scripture records this event:

John 6:1 After these things Yahushua went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.
2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased…
10 And Yahushua said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

The next morning, the multitude awoke and could not find Yahushua.  They knew that the twelve had taken a boat to Capernaum; but Yahushua had not gone with them.  They took up small boats and crossed over to see if they could find the Master.  When they found him, this is what he said to them.

John 6:53 Then Yahushua said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

Aside from the obvious repulsiveness of this word that seemed to call for cannibalizing the Master, it was a blatant violation of the Torah.  It was an unthinkable expectation.  How did they respond?

60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

After whittling away at their numbers, as if that were not enough, Yahushua turned to the twelve and said:

67 Then said Yahushua unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

On another occasion, three men approached the Master expressing their readiness to be his disciple.

Luke 9:57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58 And Yahushua said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Master, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60 Yahushua said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of Elohim.

61 And another also said, Master, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62 And Yahushua said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of Elohim.

To each person, the Master responded with a hard word.  He always wanted to insure that those who would be his disciples counted the cost of following him.  Their lives would cease to be their own.  Their lives would very likely become quite uncomfortable.  They would no longer be able to devote their attention even to the needs of their own families. Either following him became first and last to them, or they could not follow him at all.

This concept of putting one’s hand to the plough and looking back is another way of saying to count the cost.  This is demonstrated in an event recorded for us in the book of Acts.

Acts 15:36 And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.
37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.
38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.
39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;
40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of Elohim.

Paul split with his long-time friend, Barnabas, over the quality of discipleship demonstrated in the life of Barnabas’ cousin, Mark.  Mark began Paul’s and Banabas’ first missionary journey with them; but did not remain with them.  He turned back.  He had put his hand to the plough and looked back.  Paul did not want such a character going with them again. To Paul, Mark misrepresented the nature of the gospel and dishonored the Master. He was not a true disciple.

Nowhere in the Gospels do we see Messiah expressing appreciation for the pronouncement of peoples’ devotion to him.  He was unimpressed by the masses who deemed themselves to be his disciples.  He was constantly provoking them with messages to challenge their willingness to keep following him.

When the rich young ruler came to him and asked what he must do to inherit eternal life; Yahushua cited five of the ten commandments.  When the ruler said he had kept all of them from his youth, the Master replied:

Luke 18:22  Now when Yahushua heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
23  And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
24 And when Yahushua saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of Elohim!

The twelve were astonished at this and asked who then could be saved; and Yahushua answered, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with Elohim.”

Today, Christianity looks to make “believers” of people, then tuck them away in a building for meetings every week, making use of their dollars (tithes and offerings) to finance the business of the church. All the while the people outside of the church building in the neighborhoods nearby are still walking in darkness because they can see no light.  They are sick and dying because no one is bringing the healing power of the gospel to them.  They are still in bondage to sins which Messiah has already forgiven and has already provided for their freedom; and the church allows them to live their lives out in guilt and bondage.

Would we withstand the requirements of Yahushua to be his disciple; or would we be such as
cannot be his disciple because we have not forsaken all to follow him? Do we still moderate our obedience to him by the responsibility we feel to take care of our own family?  Are we waiting to retire from work before we commit to doing his will?  What is holding us back from being his disciple?  Is being his disciple not an important enough objective to us; or is it that we have bought the contemporary gospel of the “magic prayer?”  If we believe that simply praying a prayer secures our eternity; then why would any of us ever suffer loss to our own pleasures and desires to follow him; and yet, the Master says to us:

Come and follow me.”

DISCIPLESHIP 101 (Part 3 - The Cannot Be's)

WBS.206
FUNDAMENTALS OF DISCIPLESHIP

DISCIPLESHIP 101

Part 3 – The Cannot Be’s

John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Making disciples is the objective of the gospel.  Making believers is not. Discipleship is not easy.  It costs everything; but then, Messiah died for all so that they who live would no longer live for themselves; but for him who died for them.  That is the exchange; and it does not get any easier than that.  If you believe the gospel and you are not DOING what is commanded of you, there are other names for you.  Disciple is not one of them. If you are not bearing fruit, your own life testifies against you that Yahushua Messiah is not your Master.

Yahushua Messiah was not a fan of casual speech.  He didn’t sit around wondering what to talk about to fill the time of day.  His Father had enough He wanted him to say, that he didn’t need to chit chat to while away the time. Also, the Torah instructed the Hebrews to discuss the Law of IAUE when they awoke in the morning, when they sat down to eat, when they went on their way to accomplish the day’s work; when they returned home and before they went to bed at night. Obedience to this command would insure that the mindset of the Hebrews was such that they knew themselves to be the people of IAUE. His rule over them permeated their thinking.

From the moment they demanded of the prophet Samuel to anoint someone to be king over them, they began to shift their sense of obedience away from IAUE to the man that was their king. This was, for the Hebrew people, like eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  They ceased being a people of theocratic rule and became a political people, thinking like the people of other nations who knew not IAUE, and relating to life from a perspective never intended for them. This resulted in political factions, a split in the kingdom, hatred among brothers and sisters, even wars and fighting among themselves.  Ultimately, the nations that they had wanted to be like conquered them, destroyed their homes and their families, and took them into captivity.

The northern kingdom of Israel never recovered.  The southern kingdom of Judah, though restored from Babylon to Jerusalem after 70 years of captivity, never recovered their identity that was lost when they asked for a king. Now, added to that, was the mindset of the oppressed, the defeated and the slave. It was during this period of captivity that the Hebrews instigated the synagogue movement…small gatherings of no less than ten, where the elders could teach the young the laws of IAUE and the traditions of the Hebrew people, thus maintaining their heritage in the generations born in captivity that knew not Jerusalem, and who knew not IAUE.

It was into such a culture that Yahushua Messiah appeared. His words were powerful, life changing, and upsetting to the culture.  The Jews hated the Romans who were the governing power over their nation; and yet, Yahushua told them to love their enemies and to pray for them.  He told them to carry their bags a mile farther than their law required them to carry them.

Messiah taught the people that adultery began in the heart.  It did not require the act to be guilty of it.  He taught them that if your right eye offends you to cut it out; and if your right hand offends you to cut it off. He taught them no longer to swear or to make oaths; but let their speech stand for itself on its own merits, letting their yes be yes and their no be no.

Messiah taught the people that the Sabbath was made for man, not man made for the Sabbath.  He taught them to give secretly so no man knew they were giving.  He taught them not to resist evil.  If someone struck you on the cheek, to turn and let him strike the other cheek. He taught them that if someone sued you for your coat, give him your cloak also.  He taught them that if someone asked you for something, give it to him.  If someone asked to borrow something from you, lend it.

These were mindset-altering commands; and what was the purpose of such radical teaching?

Matthew 5:45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Yahushua’s teaching was restorative instruction, working to eradicate a thousand years of thinking that had been corrupted by the Hebrews choosing to be like all the other nations of the world.  He introduced his teaching to the masses first by explaining:

Matthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

It is senseless to be “called” the people of IAUE and not be different from the peoples of the world.  If we are like the world, we offer nothing to them to influence them unto righteousness and to preserve them as the people of IAUE.  Yahushua said that they ARE the salt of the earth; but that is not how they thought of themselves. Their thinking had become corrupted.  It would take genuine discipleship to be brought out of that wrong thinking to become the people of IAUE again.

Messiah’s teaching was disruptive of the culture.  It was disruptive of the politics of the day.  It was uncomfortable, and it was not easy. This was because it was not of human philosophy. It was not the way the world thinks.  It was transformative back to the time when the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil had not been violated.

The Master ONLY dealt with disciples.  He was totally disinterested in getting people simply to believe in him.  He was thronged daily by multitudes who were fascinated by his words and who marveled at his works; but they were not coming out of their worldly mindsets. They still hated their enemies, preferred themselves over others, were unwilling to make sacrifices and loved the world. He proved this to them over and over again.

Luke 14:25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them…

I want to pause there to reflect specifically on this setting for what the Master was about to say.  A study was made not long ago of pastors in the United States of America.  They were asked how they measured the success of their church.  This is what they highlighted:

1.  Worship service attendance.
2.  Number of dollars donated.
3.  Number of programs the church has.
4.  Number of persons on staff at the church.
5.  Square footage of the church’s facilities.

This is the church in the USA.  This is its measure of success. It is all about how big the business is. This is why discipleship does not happen in the churches.  Pastors are not about the Master’s work; they are about building empires…visible representations that serve as their credentials of success, measures of their own vanity.

What was Messiah’s attitude about numbers? In Luke 14, we see “great multitudes” following him.   For any contemporary church, that would have been an indisputable measure of success. There is no one on the planet today that has great multitudes following them around every single day, waiting to listen to their words and to witness their works; and yet the Master turns and says this to the multitude:

Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

This is a word that is almost incomprehensible to man.  Family is everything; and yet, he does not even pause to explain himself.  He leaves this word out there to stand on its own merits.

Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple

[We should note, here, that Yahushua was not “crucified.”  He was impaled.  The image that is the traditional “cross” was not in use at this time in human history.  The word used here is “stauros” and it means “an upright stake.”]

To the Jew, bearing a stake had a singular distinction to it. It was not a phrase used in common speech like it is, today.  Today, we frequently hear people say, “That’s just a cross I have to bear.” It is something said when we have something or someone in our life that is inconvenient or a hardship; and we say it almost tongue-in-cheek like it is humorous. No, to the Jew, death by impaling had a very special meaning.  Anyone who was condemned to death by impaling was accursed of IAUE.  Now, to great multitudes of Jews following someone they thought just might possibly be the Messiah; the notion that following him would mean they were going to be accursed of IAUE was not a great plug for membership in his church.  The donations would surely deteriorate rapidly at this point.

Luke 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Now, this comment was more in keeping with discipleship to a Master.  If one was going to give himself fully to be the pupil of a Master, he knew he would have to be prepared to do whatever the Master said, and follow his instructions without question.  They did not, however, see Yahushua as this kind of Master.  They were not ready to forsake everything to follow him.  He didn’t even have a place to sleep at night. These “cannot be’s” were what we would call, “deal breakers.”

He concluded his remarks to the great multitude by saying:

Luke 14:34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

This is not the kind of message that would conclude with a successful altar call; and yet, this is the good news.  This is the gospel.  It is the call to discipleship.  The Master did not expect the masses to become disciples; but he certainly expected those who became his disciples to search through the masses and find those whose hearts were “good ground,” and not devote all their time on those whose hearts were unwilling to be separated from the world.

DISCIPLESHIP 101 (Part 2 - The Heart of a Disciple)

FUNDAMENTALS OF DISCIPLESHIP

DISCIPLESHIP 101

Part 2 – The Heart of a Disciple

Psalm 40:6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
8 I delight to do thy will, O my Elohim: yea, thy law is within my heart.

Contemporary Christianity wastes its time and energy and finances on people of the first three types of ground, and they ignore the fourth type.  Current Christian ministry focuses almost entirely on people who have not forsaken their own lives for the gospel.  Why is this?  It is because they are in constant need of care.  Why is this? It is because they are incapable of discipleship…The yoke harnesses us to the work of the Kingdom.  If this isn’t what you signed up for, your heart condition is ground #1, ground #2 or ground #3.

It has been said that when the gospel began, it was a movement of disciples mentoring disciples.  When it moved to Greece, it became a philosophy.  When it moved to Rome, it became a religion.  When it moved into Europe, it became a culture; and when it came to America, it became a business.

Contemporary Christianity is an amalgamation of the philosophy, the religion, the culture and the business; but rarely ever is it a manifestation of discipleship.  Today, we measure the success of ministry by the size of the ministry in the same way we measure the success of a business by size of the business.  Seminary graduates seek to find the largest congregation possible to begin their pastoral ministry; and then either grow its numbers into a megachurch, or they hope to be “called” from congregation to larger congregation through the years until they are pastoring a very large congregation and have reached the appearance of success in ministry. This is one empirical evidence that the contemporary gospel message is simply a device for growing a business.

Frankly, a megachurch is a virtual impossibility with the gospel; because of its cardinal instruction to “Go.”  Even in Jerusalem, at the birth of the church, there were 3,000 who responded to the gospel in response to the very first presentation of the gospel ever made.  Not long afterwards, there were 5,000 men (we don’t know how many additional women and children were not included in that number); and then a bit later, the Scripture says that multitudes were being added regularly to the church. Once properly instructed, they went out to do what they had been taught. They did not rush out and start a building program with an enormous sanctuary, a huge fellowship hall, buildings to house Sunday School classrooms, and a gymnasium.  No, they met in houses.  Why is this?  It is because the gospel commanded them to teach the people to observe to do what Messiah had commanded them to do.  That is mentoring disciples; and you can’t do that en masse. It is personal and intimate.

Today, Contemporary Christianity teaches people what to believe. It does not teach them what to do.  Surprisingly, the Scripture does not tell us to teach people what to believe.  We are commanded to teach people what to do, how to do it, and then to get them out to do it.  The apostle Paul tells us that the Scripture is good for doctrine and instruction in righteousness; and the apostle John tells us that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth and teach us all things, such that we have no need for any man to teach us. What we need is for someone to teach us how to minister to the sick, the afflicted and the demonized; and how to present the gospel; so we can do it and then mentor those who respond to us so they are able to do the same.

I have heard so many Christians through the years say, “Well, that isn’t my gift.  I am not called to evangelism.”  If they told the truth, that sentence would become:  “Well, I am terrified to share my faith with others, because I barely have enough faith myself to keep me going from day to day.”  You can translate this sentence to: “I am a disobedient and selfish child.  I will not do as my Master commands me because I don’t like being told what to do all the time.” They are such as have hearts that are ground #2 or ground #3 in the parable of the sower.  They are incapable of discipleship.  They do not have what it takes within them to bear the fruit of the gospel.

It is entirely possible that they simply have never heard the gospel, before; and have never been given the opportunity to respond to it.  What has passed for the gospel message as long as I have been alive bears little resemblance to the gospel of the Book of Acts.  Messiah commanded that repentance and remission of sins be preached in His name; and to heal the sick and cast out demons and set the captives free in the process.  If churchgoers have heard THAT message and still will not DO what they are commanded to do; we need to stop spending time on such “believers.”  They are a distraction from the mission.

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

The Master explained to us that the masses will enter in at the wrong gate.  Only the few will follow the correct path.  We need to stop being concerned with the masses whose hearts are grounds 1, 2 and 3, and shake the dust off our feet from them.  We are in the business of making disciples, not believers.

Our opening verses demonstrate what discipleship is.

Notice it does not say, I delight to learn what your will is; or I delight to believe what your will is.  No; it says I delight to DO your will.  Now look what follows these verses:

Psalm 40:9 I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O IAUE, thou knowest.
10 I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

He did not hide or conceal from others the truth.  He DID as he was commanded.  He preached the righteousness of IAUE.  He declared His faithfulness and His salvation.  He came to DO the will of IAUE.  Where would we be today if Yahushua only believed in the will of IAUE?

The overwhelming majority of Christendom, today, are people whose hearts are the third type of ground.

Luke 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

This kind of heart is not capable of discipleship.  Why not?  It is because a disciple is one who is devoted to the instruction of a master.  These people are ruled by their own concerns and interests.  They are not capable of serving a master because they are their own master.  They cannot bear fruit.  Yahushua personally addressed this condition.

John 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

We cannot bear fruit unless we abide in the Master Yahushua Messiah.  If we are not fruit bearing, we are of no interest to him.  Only the 4th ground bears fruit.  Only a disciple can bear fruit.

Kingdom heart: a heart that offers no resistance to the performance of the will of IAUE.
