A KINGDOM HEART – LIV  (THE FLESH  IX)

Proverb 16:17 The highway of the upright is to depart from evil:  he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.

Last week’s post ended with this comment:

Revisit how you think of the promise of the gospel, the promise of the resurrection
and of the body taking on incorruption and immortality.  Is it not real in your mind?
Is the reward too far away to have a present impact on your life?  Or is it just a
fantasy that has never held your heart captive to the joy that is set before you? Our
choices determine whether the grace of Elohim will rule in our heart, or the law of
sin in the flesh will exercise dominion over our lives.   Choose.

For much too long, the teachers and preachers in this age of Christianity have focused on our position in Messiah rather than our current experience in him.  For example, we have been taught that we are the righteousness of Elohim “in Messiah;” that Messiah is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption; that we are seated with him in heavenly places “in Messiah Yahushua.” The consequence of such teaching is that believers think they may just sit back and relax and enjoy their life and pursue their own goals because Messiah has done everything for us. There are no consequences for our actions for which we need be concerned. We need only to wait for the promise to come of everlasting life.

This teaching of our position in Messiah is a half-truth.  Our position “in Messiah” has been made possible for one reason; and that reason is not to secure for us some heavenly or eternal prize.  It is so the life of Messiah in whom we have been “positioned” might be worked out experientially in our lives.

John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father I the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit…
4 Abide in me, and I in you.  As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather then, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

The whole point of being in the vine, of being “in Messiah,” is to bear fruit.  If we are not bearing fruit, we are worse than worthless and shall be cast off and cast into the fire.

Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Yahushua Messiah were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Messiah was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

The objective of being baptized into Messiah is to be able to walk in newness of life.

Romans 11:21 For if IAUE spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of IAUE: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

IAUE is not looking so much at what we believe as much as what we do.  If we believe correctly, we will be doing correctly.  Faith without corresponding actions is not faith at all.  It is a religious system of doctrine.  True faith taps into the power and life of the vine; and that life flows through us and captivates us, and takes hold and transforms the nature of the branch and bears fruit that does honor to the vine.  The only way a wild olive branch can demonstrate that it is grafted into the true vine is by bearing fruit that is consistent with the true vine.  The only way it can bear such honest fruit is by abiding in the vine so as to allow the life of the vine to take full command of the wild olive branch.

The life of Messiah is not one of deception, manipulation, pride, ego, selfishness, anger, malice, resentment, unforgiveness, plotting, conniving, taking offense, rudeness, backbiting, partying, gluttony, laziness, retaliation, defensiveness, etc.  If this is the kind of fruit we are bearing, we should be fearful, for it demonstrates that we are not abiding in the vine which is Messiah.

Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of Elohim.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

It is important to note that Paul says that those who “do such things” shall not inherit the kingdom of Elohim.  He does not state, “those who are lost, who have never prayed to accept Messiah, who do such things.”  No, he says those who “do” shall “not” inherit.  He is setting forth the distinction between the fruit of a wild olive tree (the flesh) and the fruit of the true vine, which is Yahushua Messiah.  You see, we are positioned “in him” for one purpose…to let the nature of his life be manifest in our life.

Picture, if you will, two hands with their fingers intertwined.  One hand represents the flesh, the other represents the soul.
 Soul                  Flesh

This is our condition before we come to Messiah.  Our mind, will and emotions are inseparably linked to the flesh.  It is like a brain tumor regarding which the doctor says “We cannot remove the tumor.  It has so attached itself throughout the brain; to remove it would kill the patient.”  The flesh marked every single action our soul ever chose to make because it held death over us as extortion. Our nature was flesh, because we were incapable of another kind of expression to our life.  When we repent and acknowledge the Master Yahushua, these “hands” are separated (the tumor is removed).  The flesh and the soul still exist; but no longer are they intertwined.

We know what it is that hinders our bearing the fruit of the Spirit.  It is the fact we have not relinquished our hold on the flesh.  In the new creation, when we were born of the Spirit, the hold of the flesh was relinquished from us; but now we do not want to let it go.  This condition actually serves as a litmus test to prove the quality of the gospel message to which we have responded.

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Messiah: for it is the power of IAUE unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Salvation is deliverance from our enemies and all that would hinder our ability to obey the will of IAUE.  The gospel is powerful to produce that condition within man, such that man may freely devote his life to the performance of the will of IAUE.  This, however, is not the general condition of what calls itself “the Church.”  The gospel Paul preached had an entirely different result than that which is preached today.

Galatians 5:24 And they that are Messiah’s have impaled the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Those who responded to the gospel in the New Testament “impaled the flesh with the affections and lusts.”  “Impaled” (“crucified” in most English translations) has reference to a specific judgment.  It represented not just the guilty verdict of man; but the judgment of IAUE.  One condemned to death by being impaled was rejected and condemned by IAUE; and had to be taken outside of the city to be put to death. Nothing about that person was worthy of the city of IAUE or the people of IAUE.  Such is the flesh.  It bears the condemnation of IAUE.  Those who are Messiah’s by proper response to the true gospel, consent with IAUE that the flesh is not worthy to be regarded in any manner.  It is only worthy of death in the most humiliating of manners.

The majority of believers, today, however, still consider much good in the flesh; and certainly enough good and pleasurable within it to turn from abiding in Messiah to entertain its delights.  Be cautious Church.  To the degree you entertain the flesh you will grow and bear the fruit of the flesh.  Once you bear the fruit of the flesh, it will become known to all whom you serve.

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Those who would be the disciples of the Master Yahushua Messiah must choose whether or not they will return to the bondage of the flesh (which no longer has a natural hold on their souls) or consent with IAUE that their flesh is under sentence of condemnation; to abide in the life of the Master and do the will of IAUE without resistance.  This is not something to be pondered over time or to approach as though it can be done progressively bit by bit.  It is a choice of life versus death.

Consider that from the Father’s perspective, we are a pearl of great price worthy of paying everything to possess; and yet, we cannot even possess our own souls in righteousness for a day without catering to the flesh.  We must see ourselves as IAUE sees us; and allow Him the freedom to reproduce His nature within us.  We are called to this.  Can you see it?

A KINGDOM HEART – LIII  (THE FLESH  VIII)

Philippians 2:13  For it is Elohim which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Last week’s post ended with this comment:

Just how little of a fight do we put up when we are tempted?   Do we even think
about fighting; or is it, “Oh well, there is that temptation again. I guess I should
just go ahead and give in.”  Or do we EVER think, “I have not yet resisted unto
blood striving against sin?”  This, too, lets us know where our affections truly lie.

The apostle Peter had the same revelation regarding the flesh as Paul.

1 Peter 4:1 Therefore, since Messiah has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
2  so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of IAUE.

When he refers to suffering in the flesh, Peter is not referring to suffering persecution for the name of Messiah.  He is referring to the flesh suffering…which comes by denying the flesh what it wants; thus never giving occasion for the law of sin in the flesh to be expressed in our lives.  The one who allows his flesh to suffer this denial of expression ceases from sin; because it is the law of sin in the flesh that energizes disobedience to the will of IAUE.

This “same purpose” that Messiah had to suffer in the flesh is referred to by Peter as an effective weapon against sin.  The word “arm” used here is “hoplizo.” It means to arm, or to furnish with weapons.  Many people like to talk about spiritual warfare and focus on the believer’s authority over demons; but true spiritual warfare begins here; by taking a military stance against the law of sin in the flesh.  If that enemy is not contained within our own bodies, it matters little what we do outside the body. Everything we do will be tainted by sin; hence the sad declaration, “I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Matthew 7:23).

Hebrews 10:36  For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of Elohim, ye might receive the promise.

Patience.  Surprisingly, this is a big problem with believers and disciples.  How many times have we “denied the flesh” only to decide we have been so good for so long that we should treat ourselves, now, with something that “I” want.  Our sense of the reward for our obedience is set so far in the future that it does not seem a compatible prize for what we are going through, now.  We have need of patience; so that after having done the will of Elohim, we might receive the promise.

Our faithful brother, the apostle Paul, awakened us through his personal testimony to the weakness of the flesh...not just weakness, but an actual living principle of rebellion that permeates our physical members.  Paul called it a "law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members." (Romans 7:23)

I am reminded of the story of a scorpion whose intended path was obscured by a creek.  Desiring to cross the creek, the scorpion asked a small fox if he could ride atop his head while he swam across the creek.  The fox objected saying, "You will just sting me and I will die.  No, scorpion, I will not help you."  The scorpion countered with promises of good behavior until his expressed dedications nearly embarrassed the young fox.  Finally, the fox said, "If you promise, on your word of honor, that you will not sting me, I will swim you across the creek."  The scorpion assured the fox, giving him his solemn vow not to sting him.

The fox allowed the scorpion to crawl up to the top of his head, then swam across the creek.  As the fox reached the opposing bank of the creek, the scorpion stung the fox.  As the fox weakened to his death, he said, "But you promised!"  The scorpion replied, "But you knew I was a scorpion."

The application of this tale to our study is to express that the corruption that is in our mortal bodies is not subject to change.  The law in our members is continuously "warring" against all that would deny it control and self-determination.  Though we might hear pronouncements of promised good behavior and self-denials, it is not to be trusted.  Such promises are nothing but deceptions, despite the fact that they are often quite convincing.

When a person becomes a disciple of Yahushua, the spirit of man is transformed by a new birth; a miraculous event effected by the power of IAUE through His Holy Spirit.  Concerning this new spirit, the Scripture says that old things have passed away and all things are made new (2 Corinthians 5:17). The soul of man is not directly transformed by this event.  It is not "born again," but it certainly feels the impact of the Light shining from within the newly created spirit,  The soul not only has the capability of being transformed; we, as disciples of Messiah, are commanded to facilitate that transforming process (Romans 12:1-2). The body of man remains a corrupt house in which spirit and soul reside. It does not change.  Like the scorpion, it cannot change its nature; and as such, it remains a liability until the day we die, or until the resurrection (whichever comes first).  We have the promise that we must contend with this mortal corruption until the resurrection from the dead, for Paul tells us that on that day...

1 Corinthians 15:53 ...this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

It is imperative that we acknowledge the persistent existence of the law of sin in our members in order not to be taken in by it....that we not be deceived by it.  Paul said that it WARS against our mind.  That makes it (not the body---the law of sin within the body) the enemy of our soul.  If we have such a resident enemy of our discipleship to Yahushua, how much more should we be vigilant in "keeping our heart with all diligence?"  How much more aggressive should we be in maintaining a clean heart of a pure conscience and unhindered understanding of the voice of the Master?  This brings us to our verse for today.

Philippians 2:13 For it is Elohim which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Elohim's grace has a distinct two-fold effect upon our lives.  Elohim is working within us to:

  1. To WILL to do His will.
  2. To DO that which pleases Him.
As we offer our lives in repentance and humility to the Master, we become candidates of Elohim's grace.  Our yielding to Him affords Him the liberty to pour out His grace upon our lives.  That grace has a distinct and deliberate effectiveness in altering our own human will...that part of our soulish being that is the central command post of our decision-making capacity.  Elohim works within us to choose to WANT to do His will.  That is the first and necessary step in the development of a Kingdom Heart.

Secondly, having affected our will to WANT to do His will, He is also at work within us, by His grace, to DO His will, and thus please Him.  Remember what Yahushua said of Himself?  He said that his "meat" was to "do" the will of His Father; and that He "always" did those things that "please" his Father.  Doing His Father's will was His diet.  It was what sustained Him.  The Father's grace works that same effect within our own lives.

Should we not, then, do all that we can to prevent any hardness of heart? Should we not diligently guard our heart to protect this divine flow of IAUE's powerful grace working to affect our will?  Should we not be on the alert at all times against this deceitful law of sin working within our body constantly trying to gain the ascendency over our mind?  We have a law of sin working within our physical body to wage war against our mind; desperately seeking to prevent our minds from agreeing with the will of IAUE.  We cannot win against it if we interfere with the flow of His grace working within us to will and to do of His good pleasure.  It is a choice.  What shall we choose?

Revisit how you think of the promise of the gospel, the promise of the resurrection and of the body taking on incorruption and immortality.  Is it not real in your mind?  Is the reward too far away to have a present impact on your life?  Or is it just a fantasy that has never held your heart captive to the joy that is set before you?  Our choices determine whether the grace of Elohim will rule in our heart, or the law of sin in the flesh will exercise dominion over our lives.   Choose.

Heb 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Yahushua the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of IAUE.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

Last week’s post ended with this comment:

Once we have yielded ground to demonic spirits in our lives,
we must reclaim that ground for a different master in order to
experience freedom from the predisposition to sin, the triggered
behavior created in our lives by their wicked influence.

This concept of forfeiting ground to the enemy is often discussed in the contemporary church, but almost always with the understanding that all one needs to do is cast out the demon and all will be well.  This is not the teaching of Scripture.

Luke 11:24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.
26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

When an evil spirit/demon is cast out of a man, he absolutely WILL return to examine whether or not his room has been made up and tidied for him.  Just because a demon is cast out of a man does not mean that the reason why the demon was there in the first place has been resolved.  It is imperative for us to understand this fact.  Demonic participation in our sinful practices exists because it is invited, whether knowingly or unwittingly.

As the Master said, “No man can serve two masters.”  It is not possible to love both masters.  Yahushua said that we will either hate one and love the other, or hold to one and despise the other (Matthew 6:24).  When we give ourselves over to the dictates of the flesh, we cast our affection upon the master of that domain. This has a calamitous impact on how we view Messiah and IAUE.  Do not be deceived about this.  You cannot love the flesh and love IAUE.  It is not possible. You cannot love the thing from which Messiah died to rescue you, and love him.  Your choice disdains his act. If you love the flesh, what you think you have for IAUE is not love.  It is a cultural attitude, or worse, it is self-deception or even self-delusion.

One of the most classic ways in which believers purport to “reclaim” lost ground is through self-disciplinary behavior; by denying themselves certain actions or by restricting themselves to certain patterns of behavior.  Often, fasting is used to “garner in the flesh” to demonstrate control over the flesh. Enforcing a daily “quiet time” to study or to pray; mandating attendance at church services, religious or ascetic practices all may come into play.  Paul had this to say about such things:

Colossians 2:23 These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence. (NAS)

Listen carefully to this.  When we focus on the flesh as something to be denied, and we act in accordance with that purpose, all we are doing is strengthening the flesh in different areas of our lives. We are using the flesh to overcome the flesh.  How then, should we reclaim the ground that had been forfeited to the flesh?

Colossians 3:3 If ye then be risen with Messiah, seek those things which are above, where Messiah sitteth on the right hand of IAUE.
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Messiah in IAUE.

Remember, the root problem with the flesh exercising control over our lives, and demonic spirits strengthening our sinful choices is that we have set our affection upon the flesh (No man can serve two masters.  Either he will hate the one and love the other…).  The remedy, therefore, is to set our affection on “the right Master.”  We need to reckon ourselves dead to sin and alive to IAUE.  If we are dead to sin (and the flesh), how then can it occupy the focus of our attention and become the object of our affection?  Can we have affection for a decaying, putrified corpse?  We must make a clean break from the flesh and relegate ourselves to be alive to IAUE.

Colossians 3:4 When Messiah, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of IAUE cometh on the children of disobedience:

To mortify our members, our physical body, is to do what Paul stated in Romans 12:1 in offering our bodies as living sacrifices.  We are dead to our bodies.  We no longer answer to the wishes of our flesh.  We regard our bodies as instruments of righteousness to be used in obedience to the will of IAUE, only.

Colossians 3:7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Messiah is all, and in all.

Put off the flesh.  Cast it aside.  Put on the new man which is the new creature in Messiah we became through repentance and trusting in Yahushua, bowing our knee to his mastery over us.

Colossians 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of Elohim, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Messiah forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of Elohim rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

These verses provide us a wonderful litmus test to examine where the seat of our affection truly is.  Do mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance and forgiveness characterize our lives?  These are the virtues of the “new man.”  Does peace rule in our hearts?  Do we love the brethren?  If these virtues are natural to the life we are living, we have put on the new man; but if these are virtues we lack or which we are practicing by choice, then the flesh still holds the seat of our affection; and our choice to do the “good thing” is only because we have an ulterior motive for doing them.

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Messiah dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to IAUE.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Master Yahushua, giving thanks to IAUE and the Father by him.

This, too, will come naturally to you if you have put on the new man, and the seat of your affection is in Messiah and IAUE.
* * * * *
For the past month, I have opened with the exact same passage of Scripture; and yet, so far I have not made a single comment about it.  I have wanted the sentiment of this passage to work quietly in the back of the reader’s mind while we discussed the reasons why disciples still sin.

Have you ever reflected upon your life, thinking “What if I was the one who was to be the sacrifice for sin?”  Thirty minutes later you catch yourself lusting for the girl that you saw walking across the street; or lying to someone to protect your own failure; or being angry or irritated, frustrated or annoyed at someone.  “Well, there goes the sacrifice for the human race.”  See how easy it is for us to commit sin and cease to be a viable offering for sin?  Yahushua was a man of like passions to us, and yet he chose never to respond to the flesh, to sin, or to Satan.  The Scripture says he was tempted in all manners just like we are.

If we contemplate the nature of his life contrasted with our own life, it produces such an intense honor and respect for what he accomplished on our behalf.  He endured every single human temptation, yet without sin, because of the joy that was set before him.  What was that joy?  It was knowing he had accomplished the will of his Father and thus provided a way for man to be restored into fellowship and obedience to IAUE.  The joy was the knowledge he had done the will of IAUE.

I have always admired the wisdom of the last verse in this passage of Scripture.  “Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. Just how little of a fight do we put up when we are tempted?  Do we even think about fighting; or is it, “Oh well, there is that temptation again. I guess I should just go ahead and give in.”  Or do we EVER think, “I have not yet resisted unto blood striving against sin?”  This, too, lets us know where our affections truly lie.  Whom do we love?  Ourselves…or IAUE?

A KINGDOM HEART – LI (THE FLESH VI)

A KINGDOM HEART – LI  (THE FLESH  VI)

We have the choice to remain ignorant of the Father’s will and continue
sinning with reckless abandon; or we may choose to subject our thought
life to His control and reshaping so we can learn how to recognize and
obey his good and acceptable and perfect will.

Let us not forget:  Sin, by definition, is disobedience to the will of IAUE.  Our lives are defined by our choices either to obey or to disobey the will of IAUE.  Man may desire to change the world into a better more peaceful place.  He may dedicate himself to humanitarian causes, and even lay down his life for the poor, sick and suffering; but none of these objectives matter if they are not done in obedience to the will of IAUE.  The sacrifice of Yahushua was not made to give men and woman with rebellious hearts a place to enjoy eternity.  It was made to provide the means to change men’s heart, to restore man to his divine purpose, which is to do the will of IAUE.

We stated two weeks ago that there are three primary reasons why we who are disciples still sin, why we still do not do the will of IAUE. We covered the second reason last week.  Today we will discuss the third reason:

3.  Our lives have been so consistently disobedient to the will of IAUE that we have allowed the influence of demonic spirits into our life that are now generating almost automatic behavioral responses to certain “triggers” in our life.

Let me begin this discussion by admitting that my understanding of this 3rd reason is drawn largely from my experience with the dealings of IAUE and from forty years of personal experience.  Neither of these sources will find “proof texts” in the Scripture.  It is like Paul told the Corinthians:

1 Corinthians 7:12 But to the rest speak I, not IAUE…
25 Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of IAUE: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of IAUE to be faithful.
40and I think also that I have the Spirit of IAUE.

As a teacher, I am always wary of the presentation of any so-called “Truth” if I cannot find a basis for it in Scripture; however, most of our day to day obediences to IAUE are based upon hearing and obeying His voice speaking to our hearts things which cannot be found verbatim in some book of the Old or New Testament.  James tells us in James 3:1 that teachers are judged more strictly than others; and I am always mindful of that when I share things I have been taught by the Spirit of IAUE; so with that having been said, let’s proceed to that which I believe I have obtained mercy to speak.

Our lives have been so consistently disobedient to the will of IAUE that we have allowed the influence of demonic spirits into our life that are now generating almost automatic behavioral responses to certain “triggers” in our life.

It might come as a surprise to many that the word “demon” (or “demons”) does not appear in the New Testament after the book of John.  It is not in Acts, nor the epistles of Paul, Peter, Jude or John.  In Acts we do find references to “evil spirits” and a “spirit of python,” but none of those references apply to our discussion today.

Many in the church, today, believe there is a demon around every corner and under every rock.  Everything that goes “wrong” or is unpleasant in their lives gets blamed on the devil or on demons.  The masses have no regard for doing the will of IAUE because they have responded to a false gospel and there is no fear of IAUE in their eyes; consequently, they are unaware that their self–willed lives are what produce most of the difficulties that assail their lives.

Through the years, I have heard many believers attribute such actions to demonic spirits; but this passage says this is what the flesh does, not demons.  These are the kind of behaviors that “the law of sin in the flesh” in every single person on the planet will gravitate toward if yielded to sufficiently.  Having said that, let us consider some of the items on this list.

Idolatry, witchcraft, - We can quite readily see that there is a spiritual element involved with these two.  In fact both idolatry and witchcraft directly involve an association with evil spirits.  Imagine someone who has trusted in Yahushua committing idolatry or witchcraft.  How does such a person arrive at such activity?  It is only by a persistent commitment to disobey the will of IAUE in order to gratify the lusts of the flesh.  Sin is pleasurable for a season; and our concern for the consequences of sin can be minimized and rationalized in our minds, especially when we are not actively working on having our minds renewed. This passage of Paul to the Galatians began with this comment:

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

The flesh considers the Spirit its enemy and wars against it.  The flesh does not fight fair.  It is not beyond drawing upon every fear and anxiety, pride and emotional wounding, and childhood or adult program we have written in our hearts to cope with life’s unpleasant experiences. The flesh will twist and turn every motive and intention just to get its way; and it will reward the compliant with pleasure, albeit briefly.  It can never truly satisfy or else it will never have you return to fulfill its desire.  So, understand that when the Scriptures exhort us to walk in the Spirit and to have our minds renewed to understand the good, acceptable and perfect will of IAUE, it does so to win this battle.  The Spirit can truly satisfy, eternally; but the flesh can only offer the illusion of satisfaction.  What it really provides is an addiction; and that is where the really big problems begin.

When we engage in repetitious sinning (read, “disobeying IAUE”), we are manifesting a predisposition, a choice, to fulfill the lusts of the flesh and thereby dishonor the sacred blood that was shed by Yahushua to rescue us from that very lifestyle.  Make no mistake, not only do idolatry and witchcraft have a spiritual component to them, so also do: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness and revellings.  The nature of every item in this list is the same.  Each of these behaviors war against the Spirit of IAUE; and they will seek reinforcement from outside resources to sustain their victory against the Spirit. This is where demonic involvement comes into play.

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

The Scriptures state plainly that we are going to sin even after becoming a disciple of Yahushua; but our lives as disciples are to be marked by a purpose of heart to cleave to the Master and to do the will of IAUE.  When we fail, and disobey His will, we have an advocate with the Father who can restore us from our temporary waywardness.  When our departure from the Father’s will was a manifestation of either a moment of weakness or an unrenewed mind, our restoration is a simple process because our true desire is to do His will; however, when our disobedience is from repetitious behavior because our will is in union with the flesh, we have given over ground in our lives to other spiritual masters. No man can serve two masters.

Think of anyone you know who has “anger issues.”  They manifest anger at the slightest provocation.  They do not contemplate a reason why they should be angry, they just are.  The anger is automatic, triggered by any circumstance or opportunity to manifest.  Consider those given to sexual promiscuity.  Every interaction with the opposite sex is perceived in a sexual context. They don’t contemplate a rational reason to think sexually.  It is automatic. When sinful behavior becomes automatic, triggered by any opportunity to manifest, you can be confident that the spiritual masters to whom you have yielded yourselves servants to obey are in participation.

What is the remedy to this problem?

Galatians 5:24  And they that are Messiah’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Our will must be broken. This occurs when we respond to the TRUE gospel message, which begins with, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”  Genuine repentance breaks the will, in the same way that a cowboy breaks a wild stallion to make him useful to him.  The stallion no longer lives to satisfy its own will.  It exists to serve the will of the one to whom it has yielded.

We must yield our lives, our wills, to IAUE.  If we do not, we will yield them to another master.  We might think that we are not yielding to anyone but ourselves; but after becoming a new creature in Messiah Yahushua, when we yield to the lusts of the flesh, we are yielding to something that serves the enemy of our souls; and in so doing, we ultimately yield ourselves to the mastery of demonic spirits.  Once we have yielded ground to demonic spirits in our lives, we must reclaim that ground for a different master in order to experience freedom from the predisposition to sin, the triggered behavior, created in our lives by their wicked influence.

It all boils down to the Father’s will.  We were created to do it.

Kingdom heart: a heart that offers no resistance to the performance of the will of IAUE.
