A KINGDOM HEART – XLIX (THE FLESH IV)

FUNDAMENTALS OF DISCIPLESHIP

A KINGDOM HEART – XLIX  (THE FLESH  IV)

Heb 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Yahushua the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of IAUE.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

Last week’s post ended with this comment:

There are three reasons why we who are disciples still sin.

1.    Our minds are in agreement with the impulses of our flesh.  We enjoy sin, and want to continue therein.
2.      Our minds are not renewed to understand what is the good, acceptable and perfect will of IAUE; and we sin ignorantly, not even knowing we are failing the will of IAUE.
3.      Our lives have been so consistently disobedient to the will of IAUE that we have allowed the influence of demonic spirits into our life that are now generating almost automatic behavioral responses to certain “triggers” in our life.

Sin, by definition, is disobedience to the will of IAUE.  Think of that for a moment.  We have but two options in our life.  We may do the will of IAUE, or we may disobey the will of IAUE.  We either do the will of IAUE, or refusing, we commit sin.  Therefore our lives are either committed to doing the will of IAUE, or we are sinners, plain and simple.

This is the picture described by Messiah when he discussed the broad path and the narrow path (Matthew 7:13-14).  Men choose the broad path because the gate is hard to enter and the path narrow to follow that leads to life.  Choosing the narrow path is narrow for one reason only.  There is only one will controlling life down that path. There is no freedom to do our own will down that path.  On the broad path we may do as we please; but of course, that path leads to death.  That isn’t very inspiring; and yet it reveals what we consider to be important.  It demonstrates that the masses prefer a pleasant selfish life NOW, forsaking any respect for their eternal future, over disregarding the pleasantries of the flesh, now, for an eternity of LIFE with IAUE.

(I have said it before; but let me say it again.  The broad path is not Messiah’s illustration of the lost in this world.  It is his illustration of the kind of path that is CHOSEN by those who think they have made a decision that is correct and satisfying to IAUE.  They have chosen to enter a specific gate and are walking the path that lies beyond that gate, thinking they are going the right way with their life.  The masses of the lost in this world have made no such choice. Making this fact clear, Messiah follows his remarks about the broad path with warnings about false prophets, false fruit, and the fact that not all who call him Master, and not all who do supernatural deeds in his name are even known by him.)

Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Master, Master, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Do you see what is important to IAUE?  It is fulfilling the purpose of our design.  We are created to do His will; and doing His will is the ONLY thing that will ever satisfy Him.

Hebrews 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O Elohim.
8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O Elohim. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

We see in this passage in Hebrews that Messiah was sent to replace the practice of sacrifice for sins with enabling man simply to do the will of IAUE, rather than always having to cover up his disobedience and his conscience of sin.  Messiah came to put an end to our disobedience and the need for sacrifice for sin; and to usher in an age of deliverance from all that has kept us from simply fulfilling the purpose of our design---of doing the will of IAUE .

The very concept of sin evidences that we are born to do the will of IAUE.  We are created for it. It is the purpose of our design as human beings.  If we do not dedicate ourselves to that for which we were designed, we sin. How, then, can we even entertain doing our own will?

One of the major problems in modern Christendom is the inability of the masses to think intelligently about their faith.  I say this not to be insulting, but rather to awaken the church to a problem it does not know even exists.  Just as in worldly society, so in the church there has been a progressive dumbing-down of the masses.  It is rare to find anyone in the church who can explain doctrinal concepts.  If you ask100 believers at random why Messiah had to be born of a virgin, you will get dumbfounded looks from most of them; and maybe a dozen different attempts at an explanation.  If you ask them what it means to be “saved” you will get at least a dozen different answers. If you ask them what it takes to be saved, watch out for the wild guesses and abject lack of any certainty in their answers.  If you ask them what righteousness is, those dumbfounded looks will reappear. Maybe 2% will have studied the Scriptures enough and contemplated them before IAUE enough to be able to provide answers they can document with scriptural support.

Given the lack of concern for any basic understanding of the Scriptures, it is little wonder the church is still living in such reckless abandonment to their own will…I mean, sin.  They still think sin is “bad stuff,” and doing their own will is seldom “bad” in their estimation. The masses of believers (and you can include the rest of the world in this as well) do not think of sin as anything and everything that is not the will of IAUE.  The definition of sin to most is simply, the things they have done that they regret having done.  This is why the response to the contemporary (false) gospel message that “Jesus loves you, and if you ask him into your heart, he will forgive you of your sins,” is responded to with such emotion by so many.  They find this message appeases their sense of guilt for the things they have done that they regret having done; or that they regret the consequences caused by those actions.  They find this message frees them to go on doing their own will with no more guilty conscience over the “bad stuff” they have done.  It does not enjoin them to forsaking their will to do the will of IAUE.

That brings us to our first reason why disciples still sin.

1.  Our minds are in agreement with the impulses of our flesh.  We enjoy sin, and want to continue therein.

Until we come to a revelation of the nature of sin, we will always find a reason to love it.  It is not enough to have an academic understanding that sin is wrong; that disobeying the will of IAUE is wrong; we must move beyond the “marketing” of that idea and “purchase the product.”  Knowing this only intellectually/academically is why, after we have sinned, we tell ourselves, “I knew better than to do that.”

When we ask to know what His will is, and then having heard what is His will, we evaluate His will against our other options, we have sinned already; because even if we then choose to do what He revealed is His will, it is no longer His will that is being performed; it is OUR will.  We have evaluated that what IAUE wants is, in our opinion, the best option.  It then becomes the choice of our will rather than our obedience to His will.

Proverb 14:12/16:25 “There is a way that seems right to a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death.”

We have all heard the saying, “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.”  Even that which seems good and right to man is still, by definition, the pursuit of his own will and not the will of IAUE.  This is why Solomon correctly identified it as the ways of death; or in Messiah’s terms, the broad path.

Knowing what sin is with the head is not the same as understanding it by a revelation in the heart. The Scripture tells us that it is impossible to please IAUE if we walk in the flesh.  It tells us that the flesh is at war with IAUE and is against IAUE’s purposes.  It tells us that we who have died to sin should no longer live in sin (disobedience to the will of IAUE).  It tells us that IAUE resists the proud (those who seek their own will); but gives grace (the power to do His will) to the humble.

We KNOW all of this; and yet “our minds are in agreement with the impulses of our flesh.” We still choose to sin.  Why?

1.    Because we love certain things so much we don’t care if they are wrong to IAUE.
2.    Because we love ourselves more than we love IAUE.
3.    Because we do not understand that sin is ANY and ALL disobedience to IAUE’s will.
4.    Because we do not understand that doing our will is sin, even if it is to do good.
5.    Because we have never repented (in the Scriptural sense of the word).
6.    Because we believe lies for doctrinal truths that lead us to believe that our eternal security is totally unrelated to our doing the will of IAUE.
7.    Because we have not aggressively pursued being transformed by the renewing of our minds.

This, by no means, is intended to be an exhaustive list; but rather a relative sample of the reasons why we still CHOOSE to sin, to disobey the will of IAUE.  If we would be disciples of Yahushua, we need to resolve this first reason why sin persists in our lives, immediately.  We need to sever, to break the agreement between our minds and the impulses of our flesh.  That agreement is strictly in the way we think about sin.

That brings us to the next reason…next week:

Our minds are not renewed to understand what is the good, acceptable and perfect will of IAUE; and we sin ignorantly, not even knowing we are failing the will of IAUE.

Kingdom heart: a heart that offers no resistance to the performance of the will of IAUE.

A KINGDOM HEART – XLVIII (THE FLESH III)

FUNDAMENTALS OF DISCIPLESHIP

A KINGDOM HEART – XLVIII  (THE FLESH  III)

Romans 7:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22 For I delight in the law of IAUE after the inward man:
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

Last week’s post ended with this comment:

The reality is this:  We are not in control.  We merely choose who is.
We may choose to obey the flesh, resulting in an unrighteous lifestyle
of obedience to the natural desires (1 John 2:15-16) that leads to death;
or we may choose to obey the will of IAUE, resulting in a righteous
lifestyle that leads us to life.

It has been said that the greatest lie the devil ever sold to man was that he does not exist.  I have heard many believers and nonbelievers alike say, “I don’t believe in demons,” meaning they do not believe there are such things as demons.  As with the devil, so too with demons, believing they do not exist does not make it so.  What it does is make YOU an easy prey for both.  Ignorance is not bliss.  Ignorance is deadly.

Those who have put their trust in Yahushua Messiah and truly want to walk in obedience to the will of IAUE consciously attend to the instruction of the Master and incline their hearts to hear the voice of the Spirit.  It is serious business with disciples, this matter of walking after the Spirit.

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Messiah Yahushua, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

One of the greatest pitfalls to successfully walking in/after the spirit is ignorance. (Ignorance is not a function of one’s IQ.  It is simply the absence of knowledge or understanding of a matter.)  This “pitfall of ignorance” pertains to the nature of sin.  Many students of the Scripture are familiar with the term, the “Old Sin Nature,” often simply abbreviated as the “OSN.”  This refers to the nature of the “Old Man.”  The Old Man is a term that refers to the nature of human life that results from conception by the union of the seed of man and the egg of woman; the natural life of man before being acted upon by the Spirit of IAUE to make us a new creature in Yahushua Messiah.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Messiah, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Here is the problem.  Because we are still keenly aware of how easily we succumb to the flesh, how quickly we can choose to disobey the will of IAUE to fulfill the lusts of the flesh, the lusts of the eyes and the pride of life (1 John 2:15-16) we think that is just the Old Sin Nature kicking in and drawing us away to the flesh, like it always did before we came to Messiah.  Nothing could be further from the Truth.

Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Messiah, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9 Knowing that Messiah being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto Elohim.
When we became united with Messiah, we became united with him in his death.  We were separated from that Old Sin Nature which ruled our lives because the Old Man was crucified with Messiah along with its Nature.  In its place was created a new life (2 Cor 5:17); and the nature of that new life is free from sin and alive unto IAUE our Elohim.  This is not mental gymnastics.  It is spiritual reality.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Messiah: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Messiah liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of IAUE, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Theologians tend to complicate this reality for the followers of Messiah by talking about our “position” in Messiah as something that is akin to a legal concept whose ramifications will be realized in experience in the resurrection rather than a present day functioning reality.  There is something to be said for the legitimacy of “positional” theology; but not when it robs us of present day experience.  The present day reality for those who are “in Yahushua Messiah” is that their old man is dead, and with it, their old sin nature.  The nature of the new creature they have become is righteousness.  It does not sin.  It is in perfect harmony with the will of IAUE.

So, if we have a new life within us that is in perfect harmony with the will of IAUE, why are we so messed up in our actual life experiences?  It is because we have not yet taken the “position” of our old man having being crucified with Messiah and recognized that it is present day reality.

1 John 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of IAUE was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of IAUE doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of IAUE.

Verse 9 has perplexed pretty much everyone who has ever read it; because we know ourselves and we know others, and we know that even though we have been born of IAUE we still commit sin.  So how can the apostle John say such a thing as this?  He can say it because he is referring to the actions of the new creature in Yahushua Messiah which we have become.  He is not referring to the actions of the flesh.  The nature of the new life is humble obedience to the will of IAUE.  The problem is that we who are born of the Spirit still think that the OSN is alive and well within us; because we are keenly aware of our day to day struggle with sin.

The truth is that we are not struggling against our nature.  We are ignorant of the law of sin in our physical bodies.  We lack understanding that there is a virus of sin within our bodies that constantly attempts to draw us into satisfying its cravings.  That law of sin is not our life.  It is not our nature.  It is the voice of a commander within our bodies attempting to get us to obey its orders, to subject ourselves to its authority and become its servant.  Paul had an answer to the law of sin in the flesh.

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto Elohim through Yahushua Messiah our Master.

This word “reckon” is a legal term that means to consider the evidence presented and render a conclusion based upon that evidence.   Paul tells us that the incontrovertible evidence concludes that we died in Messiah.  We are dead to sin.  We are alive to Elohim.

Do you really believe that?  Is that real to you?  If it isn’t, you will never be free from sin; because this is the cure to our walking in the flesh.  This is the remedy to the dangerous ignorance that thwarts the good intentions of disciples.

Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto Elohim, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto Elohim.

Notice in these verses the implied subject is YOU. You are being asked to make a choice. On the one hand, you have the choice of yielding to the dictates of your flesh and becoming its slave; or, on the other hand, you may choose to relate to your body as nothing more than a living sacrifice (Rom 12:1), something to which you are dead because you have offered it up to IAUE to use as He pleases; and your use of your own body is now only that of a vehicle for doing the will of IAUE.  This results in you becoming a servant of righteousness.

Do not fall prey to the lie that YOU are still a sinner; because that is no longer your nature.  If you believe that you are still a sinner, guess what will happen.  You will continue to sin.  The reality is that YOU are dead, and your life, now, is hidden with Messiah in Elohim, and the only hindrance to your walking after the Spirit and doing the will of IAUE is your continuing to choose to obey the enemy of IAUE…the law of sin in the flesh.

It makes a difference that we think we are denying a nature of sin in order to obey the voice of the Spirit.  In essence that gives sin a second vote in our life against only one vote for righteousness.  Our soul agreeing with the flesh is more often going to result in obeying the flesh.

We will take up these issues, next.

A KINGDOM HEART – XLVII (THE FLESH II)

FUNDAMENTALS OF DISCIPLESHIP

A KINGDOM HEART – XLVII  (THE FLESH  II)

Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto Elohim, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto Elohim.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? Elohim forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Last week’s post ended with this question:

What do you want?  In what do you take delight? What
brings you joy?  You are going to discover that the
answer to this basic question is either going to imprison
you in sin, or liberate you unto genuine discipleship.

A favorite Bible verse quoted by many believers is:

Psalm 37:4 Delight thyself also in IAUE: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Many fancy that their faithful observance of the religious culture of Christianity is evidence that they delight in IAUE; thus, they deserve to receive the desires of their heart.  It does not matter that their desires are almost exclusively selfish.  They pray this verse back to IAUE and enumerate their wants to Him.  So few who can quote this verse can also quote the next verse.

Psalm 37:5 Commit thy way unto IAUE; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

It is impossible to delight in IAUE and not also commit your life to His rule, trusting in His wisdom to direct your life.  Our delight in IAUE is measured by our commitment and trust.

Pause for a moment, right now, and reflect on
the desires of your heart.  What would you ask
IAUE to give you, right now?

What do you find populating this “wish list?”  What do you really desire?  Would you ask for a better job? A spouse?  A better spouse? A better income?  A better car?  A nicer house?  An easier life?  Or would you ask for wisdom, or insight, or the fruit of the Spirit in your life?  Look at what Solomon desired.

1 Chronicles 1: 9 Now, O IAUE Elohim, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.
10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?

Solomon asked for wisdom and knowledge to know how to lead IAUE’s people.  His heart’s desire was to do right by IAUE and to care for the people called by His name.  What did IAUE give him in response to this desire of his heart?

11 And Elohim said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
12 Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.

The New Testament equivalent of this exchange is found in the Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew 6:19  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also…
33  But seek ye first the kingdom of Elohim, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

The things men naturally desire, they desire to cater to their own flesh.  These natural desires can no longer be a function of our lives if we are to be the disciples of Messiah Yahushua. Such desires keep our flesh in control of our lives and keep our relationship with IAUE and Yahushua forever on a calculated basis; i.e., we will obey them when we deem obedience to their will to be acceptable to us. However, “these things” CAN be blessings that our Father gives to us as the delight of HIS heart toward us when our delight is truly, and exclusively in Him.  He responds to our delighting in Him by giving to us “these things.”  In this manner, they are not fulfilling the lusts of our flesh, because our flesh was not pursuing them.  They become gifts from our Father and our response to receiving them from Him is affection toward Him and a deeper commitment to obedience to His will.

It is not possible…I say again…it is not possible to pursue delighting in IAUE in order to get what our natural man desires. The desires that IAUE gives to us are the desires that are produced within us when we delight in Him, commit our way to Him, and trust in Him.

There must be a separation of our lives from the flesh…from the principle of sin that courses through our physical bodies, if we are going to become effective disciples of Messiah.

Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Paul establishes the concept of control.  Who is in control?  It may come as a surprise to many that we do not retain control when we choose to cater to the lusts of the flesh.  If we yield to the dictates of the flesh, the FLESH REIGNS.  Our soul (our mind, will and emotions) does not retain rulership.  The principle of sin in the flesh commands us to cater to its desires; and our response to its commands is “obedience.”  Do you see?  We do not retain control.  We become servants of the flesh.  If you can understand this exchange of reign, you can begin to understand why it seems impossible to deny ourselves certain fleshly behaviors or activities.  We have given our flesh the right to rule in those areas to which we have transferred authority to rule.  When the flesh commands…we obey.  That exchange of command must be broken for us to experience deliverance.

Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto Elohim, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto Elohim.

Paul restates this instruction a few chapters later when he says:
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of IAUE, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto IAUE, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of IAUE.

One of the keys to deliverance from the law of sin in the flesh is to relegate our bodies as no longer belonging to us.  If our bodies are “living sacrifices,” that means that they have been offered as a sacrifice unto IAUE; and though the physical body is not slain, we are now dead to our physical body.  Our bodies now belong to IAUE and they are His to use as He pleases.  Our relationship to our bodies becomes one of useful vessels in which to carry out the Father’s will.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? Elohim forbid.

The apostle had explained earlier in Romans 6, that the existence of the law is what made us aware of our sinfulness; but we died to the law when we were united with Messiah. We are now under grace…the power Elohim gives that enables us to do His will.  The question is asked, “Since we are no longer under the law, which makes us aware of sin; are we now free to sin with reckless abandon because we no longer have the law to convict us of sin?”  The answer is given in the next verse.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Sin is sin, whether or not there is law to tell us it is sin.  The reality is this:  We are not in controlWe merely choose who is.  We may choose to obey the flesh, resulting in an unrighteous lifestyle of obedience to the natural desires (1 John 2:15-16) that leads to death; or we may choose to obey the will of IAUE, resulting in a righteous lifestyle that leads us to life.

Galatians 5:24  And they that are Messiah’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

We must make a choice.

Kingdom heart: a heart that offers no resistance to the performance of the will of IAUE.
